Wonderfolk, an installation in a mine for families (commissioned by bait - Creative People and Places in South East Northumberland)
Digitally augmented lanterns allowed families to see and hear the Wonderfolk living beneath the mine. The myth of the Wonderfolk was co-created with people across South East Northumberland.
Wonderfolk is a collaboration between Becca Gill and Daniel Marcus Clark and Creative Producer Michael White.
“When we were doing our research the discovery of the coal seams really made sense of the area for us. It seemed that Woodhorn has for a long time been at the heart of a wider community so we worked with local groups from Lynemouth, Ashington and Bedlington on various parts of the project, from creating the soundtrack to creating an online world for the Wonderfolk.
“It felt right for Woodhorn once again be the thing that brought people from all of these places together.”
We worked with Alistair Anderson who performed the Ballad of the Wonderfolk at the Miners’ Picnic in June, Ashington poet Raymond Reed who advised on local dialect and young people from Bedlington-based charity Leading Link organised a Wonderfolk ‘takeover’ day at William Leech Primary in Lynemouth.
We worked with Lee Nutbean, a creative technologist and Amalgam to create a “magical” miners lamp which guided visitors around the mine, triggering sounds, projections and animations. The animations were created by the wonderful Gemma Burditt.
